Here are three examples that showcase how a writer can put their characters' emotion on the page through internalization. Using selected excerpts from well-known novels, the examples show a stripped-down version of the text with no internalization on the page, a version with an editor's advice on adding internalization in appropriate places, and a version showing the final, published text. Example 1 uses flashbacks.

Example 1 – "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"

Example 2 – "The Glass Castle"

Example 3 – "The Life We Bury"
